BMI –It is not the be all end all for health.
Not all of us are built the same. Saikelists come in all different shapes and sizes! Body Mass Index is one way allied health professionals determine an individual’s health status. Recent research has shown that our BMI is not the strongest indicator of how strong and healthy we truly are.
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index, better known as ‘BMI’ is a weight-to-height ratio, derived from an individuals weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. There are several classifications that the numbers fall under; 18.5-24.9 is categorized as the ‘ideal weight’. Any other number falling outside of this range may be considered under or overweight. The obese category reaches numbers over 30.
Why BMI may not be the best indicator for health status
As stated before, the Body Mass Index is a ratio involving the individuals’ height and weight. This measurement does not differentiate between the amounts of bone fat and muscle in the body. Placement of fat in the body is also a factor, where fat percentage as well as where it sits in the body are not taken into consideration. Fat placed more around the midsection puts individuals at a higher risk for health issues as the fat affects the vital organs that reside in our midsection. Body Mass Index does not take into consideration things such as volume of oxygen consumed, blood pressure and heart rate, which are vital factors that contribute to a person’s health.
To sum it up, there are many factors that play into deeming an individual healthy or unhealthy; not just a weight-to-height ratio. Emphasis on exercise is a great way to achieve an optimal health level. This gives us Saikelists all the more reason to get on the bike and get spinning.
